One common Nordic retail market – threat or possibility?
A borderless Nordic utility market has been on the political agenda for some 20 years. In the mid-1990s the wholesale power market was deregulated in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. The Nordic energy Ministers have emphasized that a common Nordic retail market is a natural extension of the single wholesale market, and that a harmonized retail market would strengthen the position of consumers in the electricity market. Skeptics argue instead that a Supplier Centric Model (SCM), regardless of which wholesale model you use, would create confusion and lack of clarity on the customer side and push large costs for the Utility companies, while almost no efficiency opportunities would arise.
