Diameter Gateway (IWF)

Interworking Function (IWF) ensures the continuity of roaming revenues as subscribers roam between LTE and legacy networks

LTE networks need to be interconnected with other networks in order to allow their customers to roam on other 2G, 3G and LTE networks at home and abroad.

Interoperability with other 3G/2G networks is vital to ensure that LTE subscribers have coverage in those regions or geographies where LTE networks have not yet been deployed.

To guarantee this mobile network coverage an Interworking Function (IWF) module is needed. The IWF converts Diameter to SS7/MAP and vice versa so that SS7/MAP signalling traffic used by the HLR and SGSN on 2G/3G networks is converted into the Diameter signalling protocol used by the LTE network elements and vice versa.

The IWF can be deployed in a LTE network operator or in a LSX (LTE Signalling Exchange) in order to provide a seamless interconnection between LTE and legacy mobile networks.

Key Benefits

  • Enable roaming between LTE and 2G/3G networks
  • Legacy protocol support and mapping for legacy network connectivity
  • Interoperability with legacy network elements
  • IETF, 3GPP and GSMA compliant Interworking Function
