The SMSF is the function responsible for the transmission of SMS messages between users and devices in the 5G network and those in other networks (2G/3G/4G). It interfaces with the legacy SMSC via MAP or Diameter SGd interfaces and with the AMF and UDM of the 5G network via N20 and N21 interfaces respectively. (Hybrid 4G/5G networks can continue to use IMS-encapsulated SMS for interworking with other networks.)
