There’s growing excitement in the industry about the new use cases that 5G unlocks for MVNOs. What does this mean for your business – and how can you get ready?
For 5G, as with every generation of mobile technology, the question is always asked: is there a specific ‘killer app’ that will somehow make all the difference? The truth is, that’s unlikely. There probably isn’t a 5G killer app – but there is something better. What we will obtain is an agile, dynamically flexible network that offers the potential for customisation to meet a growing array of new use cases, backed by unprecedented performance and flexibility.

The technology that 5G is built on provides a new set of tools that will help MVNOs shape an entirely new range of offers to meet the different needs of businesses, consumers and economies. It is this flexibility and agility that offers the real ‘killer app’.
5G networks enable, for the first time, different classes of service to be delivered – for mobile broadband, high-performance low latency services, and an exploding number of IoT devices – all based on a common infrastructure. It’s enabled by new technologies, such as network slicing and highly specific service control – down to individual users, sessions and devices.
This creates a wealth of opportunities for MVNOs. So, MVNOs will be able to specialise in a specific customer (consumer or business) segment, with highly specific, optimised service levels to a far greater extent than has previously been possible.
For example, slicing opens up new service optimisation and business models – for consumers, business and content delivery. It also creates a new dynamic for temporary, high-value subscriptions – as well as a host of B2B and IoT use cases. But 5G offers so much more, across multiple segments.
Take FWA – or Fixed Wireless Access – for example. FWA based on 5G wireless provides a strong complementary technology to traditional fibre rollouts – for hard to reach locations, or to ease the cost of deployment. MVNOs can step into this market as providers, delivering interesting and useful offers to residential, business or other customers.
Potentially, these offers can be extended to bundles of services that support productivity and to complement high-speed connectivity. For example, as the world may very well not be returning to the office 5x days a week any time soon (if ever), an MVNO for the remote worker, backed by FWA/LTE access, buttressed by secure comms, VPNs, collaboration tools and control of the network to optimise business applications, could be of significant interest to many corporations across the globe.

In another twist, we might even see subscribers with multiple subscriptions, so when work’s over, they might switch to a consumer or content provider for an evening’s entertainment.
All of this is set to create a vigorous, broader MVNO market that will enable existing players to extend and enhance their service portfolio, and opens up opportunities for new entrants – but what does this mean for you? What is slicing and what does it really mean? What is massive IoT? What does eSIM add to the picture? What are private networks and how might MVNOs benefit from them? How might 5G change content delivery and consumption?
We need to explore and answer these questions, so that you can understand the potential 5G brings. Decision-makers need a snapshot of some of the most compelling commercial opportunities that are set to extend the MVNO ecosystem, which will even include things like new forms of MVNE.
This new insight paper from Enghouse Networks will help you understand key factors that will shape the 5G MVNO ecosystem, such as:
- What’s set to change in terms of technology – and what this means for you
- The impact of regulation
- The most compelling commercial opportunities, across different segments and markets
- The new MVNE
